What is LoSeasonique?

The estrogen in generic LoSeasonique does not exceed 20 mcg of estrogen making it an ultra-low-dose birth control pill. "Standard" dose birth control pills contain between 35-40 mcg of estrogen. Low-dose birth control pills contain less than 35 mcg of estrogen.

Generic LoSeasonique is a bi-phasic combination birth control pill. Combination refers to its mixture of two types of hormones. It is classified as bi-phasic because the cycle of pills contains two different balances of hormones in the pills. In contrast, mono-phasic pills contain the same combination and dose of pills in each pack.

What is the difference between LoSeasonique and Lo Seasonale?

LoSeasonique and Lo Seasonale are both extended cycle combination birth control pills. However, LoSeasonique has 91 active pills and LoSeasonale has only 84 active pills. The last 7 pills in LoSeasonale are placebos and only serve as reminder pills. LoSeasonique's last seven pills contain a low dose of estrogen. 

What is the difference between Seasonique and Seasonale?

These pills contain the same combination of active ingredients and number of pills but each pill has a higher dose of the active hormones.

  • Seasonique contains 91 active pills containing 0.15 mg of levonorgestrel, 0.03 mg of ethinyl estradiol and seven pills containing 0.01 mg of ethinyl estradiol. 
  • Seasonale contains 84 active pills containing 0.15 mg of levonorgestrel and 0.03 mg of ethinyl estradiol and seven inactive pills (reminder pills).

What if I miss a dose of LoSeasonique?

Who cannot take combination birth control pills?

It is recommended that women who fit the criteria below do not take combination birth control pills:

    • Over 35 who smoke
    • Have experienced unpleasant side effects from estrogen
    • Are breastfeeding
    • Have a history of certain types of cancers such as breast cancer
    • Are at risk for heart disease
    • Have high blood pressure
    • Have a history of blood clots
    • Have migraines with aura

 Instead, a physician may prescribe progestin-only (POP) birth control pills such as norethindrone 0.35mg, also sold under the names Lyza, Heather, Sharobel, Deblitane, Camila, Nora-be, Norlyda, Errin, Jolivette, Jencycla, Micronor and Nor-qd.
